Dubs Maths Story

Learn more about one of the SA's most innovative Non-Profit

Dub's Mathematics Programme was founded in June 2019 by Mthandeni Sithole, a passionate advocate for education and Mathematics. Mthandeni, who grew up in Matimatolo village, Greytown (KZN, South Africa), was raised by his grandmother and has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by learners in his community

It all began when Mthandeni, during his first year at UCT, organized a week-long camp at his grandmother's house to assist three Grade 12 learners from his former high school, Busana High School. The camp focused on Mathematics and Physical Science, and the results were exceptional. The learners showed significant improvement, gained confidence, and went on to secure admission to tertiary education.

How our work began?

Motivated by these outcomes, Mthandeni enlisted the help of his former high school mates the following winter to tutor Grade 11 learners from Busana High School. We successfully supported 134 learners in July 2019, introducing engaging learning activities and games to enhance the experience.

As Dub's Maths continues to empower learners and pave the way for their success, our journey represents "The next step towards infinity." It's a testament to our commitment to providing quality education, unlocking potential, and guiding learners towards a limitless future.

Our commitment to empowering learners from disadvantaged backgrounds fuels their ongoing efforts to expand their reach and transform lives through the power of education.

The journey began with a camp at Mthandeni's grandmother's house, and it has since grown into a movement that is making a lasting difference in the lives of countless learners.

COVID-19 pandemic : the birth of our WhatsApp Tutoring

In 2020, the COVID -19 pandemic disrupted our in-person winter classes, and the Dubs Maths had to adapt. Recognizing the limited access for our learners to online platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams due to high mobile data costs in South Africa. We decided to leverage WhatsApp for tutoring as it is easily accessible to most learners, free and data friendly.

During the level 5 lockdown, we started Quarantine E-Learning WhatsApp group, this allowed us to reach 167 learners from 4 provinces in South Africa. Furthermore, we have used WhatsApp creatively to host career expos, inviting professionals from various fields to engage with learners and provide insights into their careers.

Our journey continues...

Dubs Maths has gained recognition as one of the most innovative organizations in South Africa by transforming WhatsApp into a dynamic learning space. Our team, which shares similar experiences and understands the challenges faced by learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, continues to make significant impact. Since our inception, we have assisted over 1 000 learners. Currently, the organization operates on a hybrid model, combining in-person tutoring during June holidays with year-round WhatsApp tutoring.
